Glazing Methods and Types

Glazing is the act of setting panes of glass into a frame as in windows, doors or mirrors. It is important to know what glazing method and glazing type you need for your project before you start because once you do it can be difficult and time consuming to change. There are three main glazing methods and types that you will need to choose from when you begin your construction project. They are:

1. Glazing Points

Glazing points are small metal pieces that hold the glass in place on wood sash and spring clips on metal window frames. They are inserted into the rabbets of the sash and they help to keep the window in place during movement. It is recommended that you prime the sash, including where the glazing will be placed before installing glazing points and then apply the putty to the back of the rabbet with a putty knife. The putty will then bond to the sash and the glazing points and hold the glass in place.

2. Insulated Glazing

Insulated glazing is a common option in new window construction today as it offers energy savings over single-pane windows. It works by separating two or more panes of glass with an airspace which helps to reduce conduction, which is the flow of heat through a window. This type of glazing can save you a lot of money in the long run because it will significantly reduce your heating and cooling costs.

3. Float Glass

Float glass is a process by which large and thin flat pieces of glass are made from molten glass that is “floated” on what is normally a piece of tin. This allows for the creation of a smooth and even sheet of glass. The glass is then tempered to ensure it will not break when shattered. Float glass can be used for windows, doors and mirrors.

It is important to understand how each of these glazing options will affect the performance and cost of your project. It is easy to misquote glazing and end up going over budget, so it is essential to do your research before committing to a glazing method or type.
