What Is Glazing?

Glazing is the process of coating a piece of glass with a material that protects it from damage and enhances its beauty. It is most commonly used on windows, but can also be applied to doors, mirrors and other surfaces. Glazing is done in many different ways, and the results can vary widely. Some glazes are clear, while others have patterns or colors embedded within them. Some are glossy, while others are matte or textured.

In both cases, the underlying clay body is fired before the decorative elements are added with an overglaze.

Ceramic glazes are liquid suspensions of finely ground minerals. They are applied to the surface of a bisque-fired ceramic ware by brushing, pouring or dipping. After the glaze dries, it is loaded into a kiln and fired to the temperature at which the glaze ingredients melt together to form a glassy surface. Because of the high temperatures involved, ceramic glazes cannot be created in home ovens; they must be fired in a professional kiln.

Using glazes in acrylic paintings can add a lot of depth and richness to your work, and they are especially useful for unifying and enhancing warm colours.
