How to Cut Glass to Size

A shattered window pane, a picture frame or a door panel that has been cut too small can be quite distressing and can easily be rectified at home. However, it is important that you take precise measurements before attempting to cut glass yourself. This will ensure that your glass is perfectly tailored to its intended application and you avoid the risk of a costly mistake that can damage the whole piece.

Generally speaking, glass is cut to size using an oil fed scoring wheel which passes over the surface of the glass, applying pressure to the entire line of the desired cutting edge. When the score is opened by application of pressure beneath the glass, it will run along this edge and separate completely. The piece of glass will then be cut to its final dimensions using a cutting tool.

This process will produce safe to handle edges, as it is a cold cutting operation. However, the edges may still be slightly sharp and will require care when handling the glass. The edges of a finished piece of glass are typically smoothed by means of a grinding or polishing operation, which is also carried out when preparing toughened or laminated glass for use in commercial and domestic applications. This is done to ensure the edges are safe to touch and do not pose any threat of injury to anyone who handles the glass in the future.

The easiest way to cut glass is to employ a simple technique. Start with a flat work surface, ideally something that is firm enough to allow you to slide the glass around without scratching it or damaging it. It is advisable to place some paper or cloth on the surface you are working on, as glass does tend to leave tiny particles of powder when it is cut.

Carefully measure the height and width of the glass pane you need to remove. You should note that the glass should be a little bigger than the frame, as it is advisable to add some extra room, as changes in temperature or humidity can cause wood and card to expand. This expansion can lead to gaps between the edge of the glass and the frame.

Once the measurements have been taken, you should carefully mark the new glass with a pencil on the back, to clearly indicate where it is going to be removed. It is a good idea to make three or four marks on the glass, this will allow you to compare them later and ensure that your measurement is accurate.

When you are happy with the marks on the glass, it is time to apply the cutting tool. It is recommended that you lightly oil the scoring wheel before you begin, in order to help the glass move more smoothly over the cutting edge. Once the scoring tool is in position, slowly draw it over the glass in a steady motion, applying moderate pressure to the entire length of the desired cutting edge. The more you apply pressure to the cutting edge, the quicker the glass will break away from it.
